New installation is expected to reduce energy costs by 35 percent
COLTON, CA – Inland Empire-based company Microdyne Plastics recently unveiled a new solar array that will make its plant greener and also help them save money.
Microdyne Plastics, produces precision injection and blow-molded plastic products. Founded in 1975, the company employs more than 100 people and has an annual revenue of more than $10 million.
The new 2,600 solar panel units, installed on the plant’s roof, are expected to reduce future energy costs by 35 percent, according to Microdyne Chief Executive Ron Brown.
Brown said the project was funded by a combination of money from the City of Colton and the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The total cost of the project was more than $4 million. The project is also the largest solar installation in Colton history.
The unveiling ceremony, was attended by local political representatives such as Stephen Wall, congressional representative for Rep. Joe Baca’s office, Frances Vasquez, field representative from San Bernardino County Supervisor Josie Gonzalez’s office, and Colton Mayor David Zamora.
“I am pleased to see Microdyne Plastics make good use of Recovery Act funding while also setting a strong example for businesses and local governments in the Inland Empire,” Baca said. “Greater investments in clean, renewable energy can lower costs in the long run, and is absolutely essential to create the new technology jobs needed for the 21st Century. I will continue to work in Congress to promote opportunities for renewable energy development so we can create more green jobs moving forward, and best ensure our economy remains competitive in an increasingly global marketplace.”
Also in attendance was Alfred Chan, regional sales manager, SolarMax Technology, Inc., the company that manufactures the solar panels. Chen praised Microdyne for its move towards green energy. “This is like going from a V-8 to a Prius,” Chan said.
