Redlands – The Creative Writing Department’s Visiting Writers Series (VWS) is pleased to announce the second event of its Spring 2014 season, featuring author and faculty member Ralph Angel.

Ralph Angel was born in Seattle, Washington. He received his BA from the University of Washington and an MFA from the University of California at Irvine. Angel is the Edith R. White Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Redlands, and a member of the MFA Program in Writing faculty at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Angel is the author of five books of poetry: Anxious Latitudes (1986); Neither World (1995), which won the James Laughlin Award; Twice Removed (2001); Exceptions and Melancholies: Poems 1986-2006 (2006), winner of the 2007 PEN USA Literary Award in Poetry; and his newest collection, Your Moon (2014). Carol Muske-Dukes from the LA Times states: “Angel’s poems are deceptively quiet, deceptively calm. Beneath their carefully constructed surfaces, they are wild, even intimidating. The power of restraint in poetry cannot be overestimated…These poems burn from within.”

Angel’s poems have appeared in numerous magazines including The New Yorker and The American Poetry Review. He has appeared in anthologies as well, such as The Best American Poetry and New American Poets of the 90s. Angel is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, a Gertrude Stein Award, the Willis Barnstone Poetry Translation Prize, a Pushcart Prize, the Bess Hokin Award of the Modern Poetry Association, and a gift from the Elgin Cox Trust.

Please join us for a reading by Ralph Angel on Thursday, March 27 at 7:30 in Hall of Letters 100, to be followed by a reception and book-signing with the author. This event is free and open to the public.

The Visiting Writers Series’ last event of the season is the annual Senior Portfolio/Redlands Review Reading on April 15.
