UC Riverside: Softspace as if it were night

A new dance work by choreographer/director Julie Mayo, MFA candidate in Experimental Choreography

In collaboration with performers Nathan Bockelman, J. Dellecave, Kendall Loyer and Sue Roginski

The University of California, Riverside, Department of Dance presents Softspace / as if it were night, a new dance work by choreographer/director Julie Mayo, MFA candidate in Experimental Choreography, in collaboration with performers Nathan Bockelman, J. Dellecave, Kendall Loyer, and Sue Roginski.

Softspace / as if it were night presents two companion works in a temporal and dreamlike dialogue with one another. Evincing an absurdist sensibility and engaging in many mini events that flow and jerk with the movement of thought, these works simultaneously defamiliarize the created-ness of performance and invite the viewer into the matrix of the worlds they elicit. Imbued with imagination, humor, and sensorial experience, the works foreground a kind of perceptual fluidity and multiplicity of meaning-making in dance while playing with everything but the kitchen sink.

Julie Mayo is a teacher, performer and director of Dim Sum Dance, dimsumdance.org, founded in 2003. Her practice-based research is concerned with the epistemology of movement-based performance generating questions that facilitate experiences for audience and performers alike, rather than pointing to singular interpretations or pre-determined “readings” of any given dance. Currently, her interests are probing the form of dance, its particular affects, and its multiple ways of meaning-making. She has been a visiting artist at The University of Wisconsin/Madison, Middlebury College, Virginia Commonwealth University, Ohio University, Columbia College, Juniata College and University of Maryland and has been commissioned by The University of Virginia and Wilson College, Pennsylvania, to create new works with their students. Mayo is a curatorial Artistic Associate of Links Hall (Chicago), a Gluck Foundation for the Arts Fellow, and is a 2010 recipient of a UCR BYPED travel grant.

Julie Mayo created Softspace / as if it were nightin partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance at the University of California, Riverside.
