RCC Veterans Club Receives $10,000 from Home Depot

Riverside City College Campus

Riverside, CA – Riverside City College Veterans Club has won $10,000 from Home Depot for the remodeling of its Veterans Resource Center.

Since 2014, the Student Veterans of America Center Initiative, which is funded by Home Depot, has built and improved Veteran spaces on 61 campuses, impacting over 30,000 students. This year, the Home Depot Foundation continued its commitment to student veterans by offering a total of $400,000 to 50 deserving SVA chapters.

RCC was one of two California community colleges in 2016 to be awarded monies from the initiative, joining Cabrillo College, and one of five California schools selected — CSU Chico, CSU East Bay and UCLA.

The monies, awarded in the form of Home Depot gift cards, will use used for updating and decorating the Veterans Center, said Garth Schultz, associate professor, Counseling, and a veteran and a graduate of RCC. Schultz added Melissa Hooper, RCC’s Student of the Year, deserves much of the credit for securing the award.

Currently, much of the equipment in use at the Center was donated and in need of replacement. RCC veterans should begin seeing improvements in the fall, Schultz said.

Along with the funds, the club also gets access to Team Depot volunteers. Here is the link to RCC’s video submission: https://vimeo.com/163863753.
