San Bernardino, CA – The Young Leadership Council (YLC), comprising of young professional between the ages of 21 to 40, has been established by Arrowhead United Way (AUW). The mission of the council is to be actively engaged in the community and inspire philanthropy and volunteerism by collaboratively partnering with the next generation of decision-makers in a unique blend of service, education, and social and networking activities throughout the year. Being a part of the YLC is a great opportunity to get hands-on involvement in the community.
The YLC held its first networking event on Thursday, September 23 to promote the support from the community and inform the public of the council’s formation. The event was sponsored by Black Angus in San Bernardino.
“With so many different generations in the workforce these days it is important to never forget the importance that a mentor’s influence can have on someone’s developing career which is why I am pleased to be a part this exciting council. The volunteer opportunities allow me an opportunity to personally to give back and help others in this community,” announced Karla Morales, YLC Chairperson.
Ivory Robinson, YLC founding member shared her reasons for joining the council, “I want to actively participate in giving back to my community and helping others. Nothing is more rewarding for me than leaving an imprint in someone’s life and mentoring allows me to do that.”
Nathan Rawls made the closing remarks and invited attendees to be a part of the council. “Members enjoy a variety of benefits including networking and socializing, attending events with noted speakers, public recognition and satisfaction of having a voice and influencing positive change,” Rawls remarked.
The founding committee includes several local professionals: Chair, Karla Morales, (San Bernardino School Employees Federal Credit Union); Vice Chair, Nathan Rawls (UPS); Activity Coordinator, Tommy Mayers (City of San Bernardino); Marketing & Public Relations, Iwona Contreras (California State University, San Bernardino); Membership Chair, Ivory Robinson (KOHL’s Distribution Center) and Edwin Gomez (San Bernardino City Unified School District).

AUW is a volunteer driven organization that actively supports health and human services by focusing on youth services, family services, and basic needs. These services address the underlying causes of the community’s issues and create lasting change. The organization was established in 1891 and is led by prominent respected community leaders; it is one of the oldest United Ways in the country.
