Hundreds of high school students from San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles County school districts will learn about manufacturing jobs during “National Manufacturing Day” at Chaffey College’s Industrial Technical Learning Center, 9400 Cherry Ave., Fontana CA on Oct. 4. The event will include a video presentation by Gov. Gavin Newsom about advanced manufacturing careers.
Students participating will be coming from districts including Fontana, Ontario, Montclair, Jurupa and Pomona, among others. The purpose of the event is to change students’ perceptions about manufacturing jobs and show them that good career opportunities exist.
Manufacturing involves the mechanical, physical or chemical transformation of materials, substances or components into new products, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs include industrial maintenance and robotics technicians, machinists, welders and more.
“Between now and 2023, employers in the Inland Empire will need about 8,000 new workers in the manufacturing sector due to industry growth and retirements,” said Sandra Sisco, director of economic development and the InTech Center. “We hope to plant a seed with these students now so that they might take advantage of this opportunity in the future and help meet the region’s workforce needs.”
Employers scheduled to talk to students about manufacturing jobs include California Steel Industries, Garner Holt, Crown Technical Systems, Dimic Steel Tech, KVP Manufacturing, Sulzer, FabFitFun, Sierra Aluminum, Pacific Precision Machining, Vital Link and more. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“The Chaffey College InTech Center has already transformed many lives by preparing students to enter high-paying manufacturing jobs,” said Chaffey College Superintendent/President Henry Shannon. “Our hope is to see some of these high school students return as InTech students so that we can help transform their lives as well.”
InTech, the first public-private partnership in California, is hosted at California Steel Industries in Fontana. InTech provides industry-driven technical training for the region’s growing manufacturing and logistics industry. The site includes state-of-the-art classrooms, labs and equipment.
