CSUSB Celebrates Armed Forces Day With Yellow Ribbon Campaign

CSUSB - Veterans

San Bernardino, Ca. – CSUSB Veterans Success Center will celebrate Armed Forces Day with a Yellow Ribbon Campaign on May 15, at the John M. Pfau Library Lawn.

The celebration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the annual “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Campaign” ceremony, followed by lunch and decoration of the trees. Prizes will be awarded to best decorated trees.

Following a brief ceremony, sponsors will meet on the library lawn to receive a yellow ribbon kit to decorate trees. Each tree will have a yellow ribbon draped at its base, small yellow ribbons around its trunk, and a sign to indicate the number of deployed service members the tree represents, with the name of the sponsor. Sponsors will affix the ribbons and signage to their trees.

The ribbons displayed on campus during the “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Campaign” are a reminder  that soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen are deployed around the world, and their loved ones await their safe return.

Any Cal State San Bernardino student organizations, departments, faculty or staff can become a sponsor. All sponsors will maintain their trees throughout the week and remove all ribbons on May 25 by 2 p.m. There is no cost to be a sponsor.

Go to the “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Campaign” registration web page at https://csusb.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0lBCFTiR0TfuvmR to participate. For disability accommodations, call (909) 537-5195; 72-hour notice required.

About Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day was created on Aug. 31, 1949, to celebrate the service of military members across all branches rather than each branch separately (i.e., Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard). Ribbons have typically been used as a symbol to display our remembrance for those serving in distant areas of the world. Historically, women have shown their support for their loved ones by wearing ribbons in their hair. With the recent conflicts, yellow ribbons have emerged again to show support for military service members deployed in combat zones.
