Old West Days Rides into San Bernardino County Museum

Demonstrations and re-enactors give a flavor of the Old West

Redlands, CA – Old West Days comes to the San Bernardino County Museum the weekend of Jan. 19 and 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. Featuring demonstrations and re-enactors, visitors can participate in hands-on activities, like clothes washing, lace making, gold planning, and card games like Faro, Vingt Un and Grand Hazard. Visitors will also be able to operate historic printing presses and take sepia-toned photos.

A dozen local nonprofit partners are participating in the event, including the 4H Club bringing mini horses; Yucaipa Valley Historical Society demonstrating laundry before electricity; the Malki Museum will interpret native plants and historic Cahuilla uses; Calico Ghost Town and Big Bear Historical Society will demonstrate different aspects of gold and silver mining, along with a gold-panning demonstration. The Heritage Trails Association and San Bernardino Historical and Pioneer Society will present a number of activities including doll making, blacksmithing, rope making, butter churning, quill pens and journals, and other activities. Other participants include Riverside Art Museum, The Mission Inn Museum, Inland Empire Handweavers Guild, the Crosstwisters, and UCCE San Bernardino Master Gardeners.

Regional Bands will perform starting at 1 p.m. each day. On Saturday, 1 to 2:30 p.m., The Brennans, a bluegrass family band from Lake Forest will perform; on Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m., Lazy Brad Lewis Band from Anaheim will perform.

Re-enactors Pico Pistolero, certified scoundrel, will be demonstrating card games, tricks, and scams, and So-Cal Settlers will be performing a mock courtroom to issue gold claims, warrants, and marriage licenses, and will also have an 1800s doctor’s office complete with surgical room and pharmacy.

In addition, the event will include timed talks each day at 1 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Hardy Brown II leads a talk and tour of the Black Voice Foundation sponsored “Footsteps to You: Chattel Slavery” in the Fisk Gallery.

Saturday at 2 p.m.: Curator Gallery Community Discussion, Curator of Anthropology Tamara Sierra-Leiva leads a discussion on the complicated history of minerals, mining and indigenous communities. In the Minerals Rock exhibit.

Sunday at 2 p.m.: Curator Gallery Community Discussion, Curator of Integrated Sciences Jessika Vazquez leads a discussion on minerals, mining and the environment” in the Minerals Rock exhibit.

The San Bernardino County Museum’s exhibits of regional, cultural and natural history and the Museum’s other exciting events and programs reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Old West Days is included with general admission: $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12).
