Ramos Co-Authored Pro Law Enforcement Bill Signed Into Law

Sacramento, Ca – Assemblymember James C. Ramos (D – Highland) is proud to report that SB 230, which he is a co-author on, has been signed by the Governor. The bill provides necessary training and resources to local law enforcement agencies on use of force.

“Law enforcement has been asking for these resources for a long time. This bill deals with training, but beyond this bill, it works to build trust and respect to those in law enforcement who risk their lives on our behalf,” said Assemblymember Ramos.

SB 230 will require law enforcement agencies to provide regular training on new use of force of policies. The policy will include provisions that prioritize de-escalation to avoid situations that lead to violence. It also includes guidelines for handling mental health crises, bias, and stigma.

“SB 230 marks a distinct shift in the collaboration and cooperation with law enforcement and state legislators in alignment with goals to keep communities and officers safe. Assemblymember James Ramos was an integral part in getting bipartisan support in the Assembly and Senate. On a personal note, I am incredibly grateful for all Assemblymember Ramos has done to support our local law enforcement,” said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Employee Benefit Association (SEBA) President Grant Ward.

Law enforcement agencies have until January 1, 2021 to enact the policies set forth in SB 230.
