University of Redlands: Inland Opportunities – Immigration And A Changing Region

Redlands, CA – KPPC’s In Person will be hosting a discussion on “Inland Opportunities – Immigration and a Changing Region” at the University of Redlands on December 4th, 2018.

Join KPCC’s A Martinez and KPCC In Person at the University of Redlands as they explore what’s inspiring this surge in immigration and its implications on the region’s politics, economy, workforce, businesses and more.

Based in part on an April 2018 report from the University of California, Riverside’s Center for Social Innovation, “State of Immigrants in the Inland Empire,” the conversation will expand on the statistics, challenges, and opportunities the Inland Empire is facing.

Now, one in five Inland Empire residents is foreign born, according to a study by UC Riverside’s Center for Social Innovation. Things are changing, at least in part thanks to the two-county region’s affordable housing and economic opportunities

While introducing the project, Center for Social Innovation Director Karthick Ramakrishnan described it as the result of collaborative partnerships formed with private and public stakeholders to address policy issues tied to immigration.

The immigrant populations flocking to the Inland Empire are not the same ones we’ve seen in recent years in Los Angeles, where there’s a higher concentration of Central and South American and Chinese immigrants. Rather, the IE has in recent years attracted immigrants from Mexico and the Philippines.
