Fontana, Ca. – The recently adopted Fontana Active Transportation Plan (ATP) has been selected as the winning project for the 2018 Inland Empire Section of the American Planning Association (IES-APA) Awards Program in the category of Transportation Planning. Being a category winner at the section level allows the project to be recognized at the state level. The award recognizes projects designed to increase transportation choices for all populations, reduce congestion and reduce the necessity for private automobiles. View ATP.
“The Fontana Active Transportation Plan has been recognized as being exemplary in the areas of innovation, compatibility, community engagement and effectiveness. This award recognizes the efforts of all participants, especially the residents of Fontana who provided valuable feedback throughout the 2-year process,” stated City of Fontana Associate Planner Brett Hamilton. “The ATP opens the door to opportunity.”
The ATP will be used as a planning tool for implementing infrastructure improvements for better connectivity throughout Fontana to surrounding areas by providing safe walking and bicycling options.
The purpose of the IES-APA Awards Program is to encourage quality in planning and increase the public’s awareness of the planning profession through recognizing outstanding achievement in the planning field. The American Planning Association California Chapter, Inland Empire Section – The American Planning Association is a non-profit professional research organization committed to urban, suburban, regional and rural planning. The Inland Empire Section is one of eight in California.
The City of Fontana Planning Division and Engineering Department coordinated efforts with Alta Planning & Design to work with the community to develop the Active Transportation Plan. Those who worked on the plan include:
