Fontana Walks! Reaches Goal of 2 Billion Steps

Fontana Walks

Fontana, Calif. – Fontana Walks! program has surpassed its goal of reaching over 2 billion steps since Healthy Fontana launched the program in August 2017. As a recipient of a Community Challenge Grant from AARP, Fontana implemented the Fontana Walks! program to challenge the community to walk 2 billion steps, or 1 million miles, over the course of one year to promote health and fitness. With approximately two months left in the program, participants are not showing signs of slowing down. Healthy Fontana continues to receive new participant registrations for the upcoming Community Walks on June 16, July 21 and August 18, 2018.

As part of the program, Healthy Fontana hosts a community walk where participants can encourage each other and share tips on how to maintain their healthy habits all while increasing their daily step count.

The next Community Walks will take place on Saturday, June 16 at 8:00 a.m. at the Steelworkers’ Auditorium, Saturday, July 21 at 7:00 a.m. at Fontana Park, and Saturday, August 18 at 7:00 a.m. along the Pacific Electric Trail near the Miller Amphitheater. Participants are encouraged to walk with family and friends, map out different routes for each week, set reasonable goals and reward themselves to stay motivated on their fitness journey.

“We are so excited about the response that we have received from the community for this program,” says Tiffany Starks, Community Services Supervisor. “To see the community respond so positively by joining us on this journey just shows that this community is dedicated to making better choices for themselves and to show the nation that it can be done.”

The walk planned for August 18, 2018, will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Fontana! Walks program. Lace up your walking shoes and bring your family to the Pacific Electric Trail. The festivities will begin at 7:00 a.m. with a light stretch before a scenic community walk along the Pacific Electric Trail. This anniversary celebration walk will be followed by a free resource fair, music, giveaways and healthy snacks at the Miller Amphitheater.

Regular physical activity has been shown to help control weight and lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and depression. By walking 12 minutes a day, an individual can increase attentiveness, health, and help alleviate symptoms of depression. Join Fontana Walks! for free, log your weekly step count, and help our community reach our new 3 billion step goal.
