RIVERSIDE, CA – The University of California, Riverside, Department of Music Chamber Singers and Choral Society present unexpected varieties of religious expression, from Benjamin Britten’s exuberant Rejoice in the Lamb and Festival Te Deum to Holst’s English explorations of ancient Sanskrit texts from Rig Veda. Included are arrangements of American and African-American hymns and spirituals by Alice Parker, William Dawson and Aaron Copland, the Jewish prayer Kiddush as set by Kurt Weill, contemporary psalm settings in Hebrew and English by Robert Starer, Eddie Rubeiz and Joel Phillips, and Rumi’s text There are Hundreds of Ways to Kneel and Kiss the Ground. Special guest artists include pianist and organist Abe Fabella, violist Frances Moore, and vocalists Samela Beasom, Mark Beasom, Mary Ella Van Voorhis, and Sean McDermott. Ruth Charloff and G. Edward Bruner conduct.
