SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Those attending the baseball game between the Inland Empire 66ers and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Friday, July 23 are in for a special treat. Not only will the Laker Girls be there, mascot Bernie will be “pitching” the Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous official souvenir T-shirt into the crowds.
This will be the unveiling of the 21st Annual Rendezvous T-shirt which commemorates California’s largest cruisin’ classic car show, the Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous®. The 35-blocks of historical downtown San Bernardino is turned into an automotive haven with 1,700 hot rods, classics and custom cars cruising from September 16 – 19, 2010.
“There is nothing more American than baseball and classic cars,” states Wayne Austin, president & CEO of the San Bernardino Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The evening will be filled with fun as we unveil the T-shirt, and toss them into the stands.”
The cars that are featured on the T-shirt will be at the entrance of the stadium, a 1934 Chevy Coupe owned by George and Carol Nix and a 1966 Mustang which belongs to Chris Owens.
“To think my ’66 Mustang would be selected for the artwork, I mean, I’m not really sure there are words to describe it,” said Owens. “After I did a dance, I called my daughter, who helped rebuild the car.”
As for the Nix family, they are so proud that they plan on mounting the poster along with the T-shirt to display in their house. “Normally a black car doesn’t get selected as it might not be colorful enough,” said George. “I’m sure the flames on the car helped.”
The Inland Empire 66ers, San Bernardino’s single-A minor league Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team in the California League, has enjoyed tremendous success over the years, winning the hearts and minds of the Inland Empire in the process.
