RIVERSIDE, CA –
The University of California, Riverside, Department of Dance presents (En)counter [balance], an unconventional, interdisciplinary, performance collaboration. Choreography conceived and performed by Crystal Sepúlveda features no.e Parker’s structured improvisational score of referential sounds and external field recordings performed live. SMOOSH, a video project component of (En)counter [balance], is captured and edited by Peter Witrak.
(En)counter [balance], a solo-duet, experiments with diverse relationships between movement and sound. Sepúlveda and Parker simultaneously navigate first impressions, personal space, and being present throughout a journey within a set of simple, ordinary, charcoal-black chairs. Sepúlveda moves from one place to another, through a sonic landscape punctuated by silent interruptions. Her acts of repetition operate as change, as she evokes a sense of waiting, presence as absence and awareness of space – all driven by improvisation in performance. Sepúlveda and Parker invite you to wait a while and experience (En)counter [balance].
Crystal Sepúlveda created this work in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Experimental Choreography.
