RIVERSIDE, CA – The University of California, Riverside, Department of Music presents the UCR Chamber Singers and Choral Society with the UCR Orchestra for a night of spectacular choral music on the theme of War, featuring Ralph Vaughan Williams’ impassioned masterpiece Dona Nobis Pacem based on Civil War poetry by Walt Whitman. Guest artists Camelia Voin and Ralph Cato will be the soprano and baritone soloists. The flavor of soldiers’ lives comes alive through authentic soldier songs from the Civil War and World War I in newly-commissioned arrangements by Robert Giracello and Aaron Fruchtman. Also on the program is the West Coast premiere of the haunting composition Ashes of Soldiers by Byron Adams. Adams, a renowned scholar on Vaughan Williams and an entertaining speaker, will offer his perceptive pre-concert comments on Saturday at 7:00 pm, and on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
“War” is this year’s annual theme for the UCR College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences with performances, films and talks occurring throughout the year.
