Seeking Civility: Understanding & Eradicating Bullying @ Work
Workplace bullying is systematic psychological abuse that degrades and humiliates, and causes anxiety, depression, burnout, and lower levels of job satisfaction in targets and bystanders. A strong anti-bullying policy is only part of the answer: HR needs-to-know how to differentiate bullying from conflict and performance management issues, recognize potential signs, provide employees and supervisors with appropriate training, manage an effective complaint and investigation process, and ultimately develop a culture that does not tolerate abusive workplace behaviors.
Participants will gain research-based information in the following areas: Definition of bullying, and examples of behaviors; Comprehensive knowledge about the social system of bullying, including traits of bullies, targets and organizations; An understanding of damage caused to targets, bystanders, and the organization; Information about how to determine the costs of bullying within your own organization and make the business case for addressing it; Manager tools for addressing bullying behaviors at work, including policy development and grievance handling; Tactics for building preventative, sustainable positive culture change; Information about why bullying is legal in the US and status of potential laws
