Amazon Hosts Students From KIPP Sol Academy In Honor of National STEM Day
Last week, Amazon hosted students and staff from the KIPP Sol Academy for Amazon Future Engineer Robotics Camp, part of the Amazon Future Engineer program, which aims to provide computer science education and access to all students, especially those from underrepresented and underserved communities. KIPP Sol Academy is one of 100 schools throughout the U.S. chosen to receive an Amazon Future Engineer Robotics Grant.
In honor of the National STEM Day, about 20 students participated in the camp, which included a behind-the-scenes tour of Amazon’s one million square-foot robotics fulfillment center and the opportunity to talk with Amazon leaders about careers in robotics.
“Amazon wants to encourage children to build, imagine and innovate, and we’re proud to support STEM and computer science education programs at KIPP Sol Academy,” said Michelle Mulcahy, General Manager, Amazon. “Technology and innovation fuel our business, and we recognize that the jobs of tomorrow require a stronger aptitude for computer science skills. We want to help students get excited about computer science and inspire them to think big, and our Amazon Future Engineer Robotics Camps are just one way we do that.”
All 100 schools selected for this program will receive FIRST® Robotics support, enabling KIPP Sol to launch their first-ever robotics club and a $10,000 Amazon Future Engineer grant to expand computer science education within their school.
“Amazon’s Future Engineer Grant allows us to introduce robotics and STEM activities to students who want and need it the most,” said Maria Serrano-Salvatierra, a teacher from KIPP Sol Academy. “It means a lot to see their faces light up as they learn about robotics and get the opportunity to compete as a team at FIRST® robotics competitions.”
