Popular Song
RIVERSIDE, CA – The University of California, Riverside, Department of Dance presents POPULAR SONG by choreographer Peter Witrak, featuring dancers Alfonso Cervera, Luis Lopez Maldonado and Brandon Wagner. POPULAR SONG is a dance performance involving a fetishized folk icon, androgynous youth, severe choreographic utopias, a mysterious commodity, and a razor-sharp sound score edited by Grand Theft Disco. A visual and choreographic tone poem, POPULAR SONG provides a glimpse into a dancing dystopia, in which young dancers are screened for innovative moves. How will they assert themselves before the dictatorial video camera and spectacle-hungry masses? With defiance, indulgence, or restraint?
Followed by SHORTS, an assortment of solo choreography and video compositions referencing a girl from the past, figure skating, geography, paper haircuts, and a problematic dance studio.
Peter Witrak created POPULAR SONG in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance at the University of California, Riverside.
