3rd Annual Discovery Camp: The two-day event at MSJC teaches high school students about careers in healthcare

Menifee, CA – Mt. San Jacinto College’s School of Nursing and Allied Health hosted its 3rd annual Health Occupations Discovery Camp for local high school students on Jan. 9, 2019 and Jan. 10, 2019 on MSJC’s Menifee Valley Campus.

More than 200 high school students worked with 60 MSJC nursing students in hands-on workshops that showcased careers in nursing and allied health. The event was organized by the MSJC School of Nursing and Allied Health and the Inland Health Professions Coalition-Reach Out.

“The two-day Discovery Camp at MSJC was designed to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Dr. Peter Zografos, director of School of Nursing and Allied Health at MSJC.

The students participated in activities that gave them a taste of careers in healthcare, including registered nurses, nursing assistants, emergency medical technicians, diagnostic medical sonography and other related careers.

Lucas Fowler, 18, of Chaparral High School in Temecula, said the event helped guide his future plans.

“Seeing all this gave me a sense of what I want to pursue. After this event, I am strongly considering to pursue a career in nursing,” Fowler said.

Kristin Rodriguez, one of the MSJC staff members who helped organize the event, said the high school students who participate in the event are excited about attending MSJC in the future.

“The high school students enjoy working alongside current MSJC students and speak highly of the camp, with a large majority of the students saying they will be coming to MSJC after high school,” Rodriguez said.
