Tour de Foothills in Upland Expecting Large Turnout
Upland, Calif. — More than 1,000 cyclists are expected to take to Southern California streets for one of California’s biggest bicycling events on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Founded by the Upland Chamber of Commerce in 2005, the annual Tour de Foothills will take off from Historic Downtown Upland with four separate rides ranging from a challenging 100-mile tour to slower-paced family ride.
Presented by Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare in Pomona, the Upland Chamber of Commerce’s annual cycling event includes the Century (100 miles), Metric Century (62 miles), Half Metric Century (31 miles) and the family ride (12 miles) on the Pacific Electric Trail. Each route takes riders along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.
All veterans, active military and hand cyclist ride for free.
Tour de Brews, the event’s official post-ride festival, will feature an array of vendors, food and beer garden from noon-6 p.m.
More than a dozen community organizations and causes benefit from proceeds raised from the Tour de Foothills, including Paralympic athletes, local youth cycling programs, veterans’ organizations, and other groups helping the hungry, cancer patients and disabled individuals, among others. Last year’s Tour de Foothills raised more than $20,000 to these and other non-profit organizations. A complete list can be found at tourdefoothills.com Who We Help.
This year, the Tour will include a family ride with a bicycle safety class with instruction from San Bernardino County Safe Routes to School. Young cyclists will learn bike handling and traffic skills to help them reduce cycling injuries and enjoy the sport. Children, ages 5 to 12 are encouraged to attend the ride starting at 9:30 a.m. Parents are also welcome to participate.
“The Tour as a family-friendly event – an activity that parents and kids can participate in together and have a good time,” says Richard Mayo, Tour de Foothills ride director.
All routes start and finish in downtown Upland just north of the Upland Metrolink station.
